Origin and history

The Château de la Serraz, located in Bourget-du-Lac en Savoie, is a monument whose architectural origins date back to the 17th and 19th centuries. The site preserves a unique medieval vestige marking the entrance to the courtyard, while the main body, in the shape of L, is completed by commons and a grid closing the space. The central façade, dominated by an adorned tower, features a floral decoration under the roof, gutters with lion heads, and classical elements such as colonnades, capitals and oculi. This tower, the nodal point of the castle, serves the floors via a double-flyed staircase and opens onto the interior rooms, including the chapel located at the entrance of the property.

The original composition of the estate has been preserved until today, including elements protected by two stops of inscription to the Historical Monuments: in 1989 for the salons, the library and the cabinet, and in 2007 for facades, roofs, courtyards, terrace, park, and its facilities (grill, bridge, retaining walls). The stables and the chapel are also part of this classified ensemble. The architecture reflects a superposition of the epochs, with medieval traces integrated into a structure remodelled in the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, typical of the noble residences of Savoy.

The castle illustrates the evolution of seigneurial estates in the Alpine region, where aristocratic families have often modernised their properties while retaining ancient elements. The presence of a private chapel and a closed park underscores the residential and representative character of the place. Successive protections reflect the heritage value of the site, both for its architecture and for its landscape integrity, rare in the region.

The available sources (Monumentum, Mérimée base) precisely locate the castle at 5387 La Serraz, in the commune of Bourget-du-Lac (code Insee 73051), on the edge of the lake of the same name. No information is provided on its current accessibility (visits, rentals, accommodations), but its status as a Historic Monument makes it a remarkable Savoyard heritage site.
