Origin and history
The Château de la Ville-au-Fourrier, located in Vernoil-le-Fourrier in the department of Maine-et-Loire, is a building whose origins date back to at least the thirteenth century, with architectural elements still visible dating back to the fifteenth century. The site preserves three corner towers and the major work of the southern wing of this medieval period, demonstrating its early historical importance.
In the 16th century, a large square building was built, encompassing the initial medieval structure. This major development marks a significant expansion phase, perhaps reflecting the social rise of its owners or increased defensive needs. The 17th century saw the addition of a gallery doubling the west wing, as well as interior arrangements that partially transformed the castle into a more comfortable residence, adapted to the standards of the time.
The modifications continued in the 18th and 19th centuries, with major changes in interiors and facades. In 1837, the fronts on courtyards were changed, while those overlooking the park, as well as stables and sheds, date from the last quarter of the 19th century. These transformations illustrate the evolution of architectural tastes and functional needs, particularly under the influence of landscape architect Buhler, mentioned for his work on outdoor spaces.
The castle is officially recognized for its heritage value in 2001, when its facades, roofs, and commons are listed as historical monuments. This legal protection underlines its importance as a witness to medieval, modern and contemporary times, as well as its role in the architectural landscape of Anjou.
Today, the Château de la Ville-au-Fourrier remains a private property, limiting its accessibility to the public. However, its inclusion in the historical monuments of Maine-et-Loire makes it a key element of the local heritage, preserved for future generations. Its history reflects the social, economic and cultural dynamics that have shaped the Pays de la Loire region over the centuries.
