Origin and history

The Château de Labarom, located in Saint-Martin-la-Pallu in New Aquitaine, is a house built between 1490 and 1507 at the hinge of the 15th and 16th centuries. Originally, this Gothic monument was lined with moat and organized around a courtyard and gardens. Its architecture evolved into a more classic style over the centuries, especially in the seventeenth century, a period also marked by major transformations.

The 19th century demolitions profoundly altered the castle, erasing medieval traces as well as a house in return for square and several buildings of the courtyard. Today, the main house, rectangular, retains a square tower in the east. Its interior contains remarkable elements: a large living room decorated with 19th century woodwork, a dining room with a dated and signed Regency fireplace, and on the first floor, a partition consisting of panels from the 16th and 17th centuries, reassembled in the 19th century.

The estate also includes a dovecote registered with the Historic Monuments since 1989, while the house, communes, basins and fountain were protected in 2006. These inscriptions reflect the heritage value of a site where medieval, classical and modern transformations combine.

The location of the castle, originally associated with Cheneché (code Insee 86281, Department of Vienna), is now specified in Saint-Martin-la-Pallu, in the Poitou-Charentes, integrated into the New Aquitaine region. The available sources (Monumentum, Mérimée base) underline its historical and architectural importance, despite the fact that geographical accuracy sometimes varies according to the documents.
