Origin and history
The Château de Laloubère, located in the Hautes-Pyrénées, is a building of the early 19th century, profoundly renovated around 1818 in the Empire style. It is distinguished by a massive architecture, resulting from the additions of this period, and incorporates older elements, like a feudal motte dated around the year thousand, still visible with its ditches. The transfer of the site to its current location probably dates back to this medieval era. The present castle includes outbuildings built on the site of earlier buildings, with re-use materials.
The property includes several remarkable elements: a chapel that served as a parish church, a doorway, and a park with a commemorative column erected in 1823 to mark the visit of the Duchess of Angoulême. Inside, the castle houses an honorary pumpkin staircase, decorated with frescoes depicting dancers, Roman characters and putti on a red background. This staircase serves three floors and is a central element of the interior distribution. The ground floor includes three well-decorated reception rooms (living room, dining room, vestibule): the lounge-vestibule features marouflé bird canvases and a painted ceiling, while the dining room is wooded and the oriental lounge is decorated with grey friezes and putti.
The castle was the subject of a partial inscription to the Historical Monuments in 1995, covering its facades, roofs, the honorary staircase with its decor, the chapel, the doorway, the commemorative column and the feudal motte. These protections highlight the heritage value of a combination of medieval heritage and 19th century transformations, reflecting both local history and stylistic influences of the era.
The location of the castle is specified at 12 Rue du Maréchal Foch in Laloubère, in the department of Hautes-Pyrénées (Occitanie region). Although some parts of the estate are protected, such as facades and roofs of the castle (excluding outbuildings) or reception rooms, other elements, such as recent additions to the gate, are excluded. The feudal motte, surrounded by its ditches, remains a major archaeological testimony of the site, recalling its ancient occupation.
