Origin and history
The castle of Larroque-Toirac is a castle built between the 12th and 15th centuries, with an initial castrum in the 13th century, a reinforced enclosure in the 14th century, and a new castle erected in the 15th century. Atop a cliff overlooking the Lot Valley, it offered a defensive strategic position. Occupied by the English several times during the Hundred Years' War, he illustrates medieval conflicts in Quercy.
In the 16th century, the seigneurial residence was embellished with frescoes dated between 1515 and 1531, as well as Gothic chimneys. The castle preserves its medieval cuisine and 17th century amenities, although the dungeon was partially demolished in 1793. The caves troglodytes of the cliff, occupied since Neolithic, once served as cellars or sheepfolds.
Acquired in 1924 by the Wagner-Autesserre family, the castle was previously used as a municipal school and shelter for teachers. It was listed as a historical monument in 1946 and in 1995 it now houses a private park with exotic plants, located on the site of the former fortified village. Open to the public in summer, it offers visits and cultural events such as concerts or night tours.
