Origin and history

Lauzières Castle, mentioned as a castrum in the 12th century, is a typical example of a medieval fortress in Languedoc. The current remains include a partially collapsed access door, the base of a dungeon, two enclosure towers, and vaulted rooms on the ground floor. A kitchen with the remains of an imposing fireplace and a 14th century screw staircase remain, reflecting the defensive and residential developments of the period. These elements, combined with 15th century windows, illustrate architectural evolutions over centuries.

In the 14th century, the castle chapel was rebuilt and became the parish church of the village, marking its integration into local religious life. A staircase and a house were added later, probably between the 16th and 17th centuries, reflecting an adaptation to seigneurial or residential needs. Today, when abandoned, however, the site retains significant traces of its past: partial round road, enclosure walls, and elements protected since 1942 by the Historical Monuments. Its present state limits access, but the ruins offer an overview of medieval construction techniques.

The location of the castle, near the hamlet of Lauzières at Octon (Hérault), is attested by approximate GPS coordinates and an address referenced in the Mérimée base. Although cartographic accuracy is considered "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), the remains remain a tangible testimony of Occitan feudal history, between territorial defence, seigneurial life and religious role. There is, however, no specific information on sponsors or specific military events related to the site.
