Origin and history
Liberty Castle, located in Condat-lès-Montboissier in Puy-de-Dôme, has its origins in the 16th century as the seat of a fief founded around 1580. Its major reconstruction in the 18th century ended in 1761, adopting a classic ordinance: a body of central houses flanked by four pavilions, framed by wings of communes delimiting a rectangular courtyard. The facade on the garden side, marked by steps, once overlooked French-style beds, later replaced by an English-style park. The facades, typical of the 18th century provincial architecture, contrast with the interior, where Italian cabinetmakers made around 1750 painted woodwork and panelling supplemented by tapestries of Aubusson or Felletin in the main rooms.
Ranked a Historic Monument in 1974, the castle protects several remarkable elements: the entrance door (vantaux et imposte), an interior staircase made of wrought iron, as well as seven rooms with their original decoration (lounges, chapel, rooms). The facades and roofs are also included in the inventory. The building thus illustrates the transition between the French regular gardens and the English landscapes, while maintaining furniture and interior decorations representative of the provincial aristocratic taste of the Lights.
The exact address, 2 Liberty in Condat-lès-Montboissier (code INSEE 63119), places the monument in a rural setting of the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park. Although sources mention a "a priori satisfactory" location (note 7/10), no specific information is available on its current accessibility (visits, accommodation or events). The castle, however, remains a major architectural and artistic testimony of the noble heritage in Auvergne under the Old Regime and in the 19th century.
