Origin and history

Longua Castle, located in Saint-Médard-de-Mussidan on the edge of Isle, occupies a historic site marked by prehistoric remains, a Gallo-Roman villa and a medieval castle. The place, inhabited for millennia, was completely rebuilt in 1818 on the foundations of the old castle, only the chapel, built in 1435, remains today. The building, unchanged since its reconstruction, perfectly illustrates the architecture and decorations of the early nineteenth century, with its classical volumes and interior ornaments.

The estate extends over a landscaped park attributed to architect Bülher, a specialist in 19th century picturesque gardens. This park, as well as the medieval chapel, complete a coherent heritage complex, protected by successive inscriptions under the title of Historic Monuments: the castle and its outbuildings in 2002, then the park in 2004. The site, preserved in its original state, offers a rare example of post-revolutionary aristocratic residence, mixing medieval heritage and landscape modernity.

Although the sources do not specify its current use, the castle of Longua embodies an architectural transition between the Middle Ages and the contemporary era. Its park, designed to harmonize nature and art, reflects the romantic influences of the time, while the chapel, older, recalls the religious and seigneurial past of the place. The whole, classified and protected, constitutes a remarkable heritage of the Dordogne and New Aquitaine.
