Origin and history

The château de Loriere, located in Val-au-Perche in the department of Orne, is an iconic 18th century building. Built in 1746 on the site of an ancient castle mentioned in 1541 and 1577, it embodies the rural architecture of that period, with a central body flanked by two side pavilions. Its history was marked by its seizure and sale in 1794, in the revolutionary context.

The castle is surrounded by a park built in the 19th century, now labeled a remarkable Garden by the Ministry of Culture. Its facades, roofs and the park have been protected as historical monuments since 1990 and 1992. Inside, woodwork with painted hazelnuts and a original pavement testify to its architectural heritage.

The more recent communes consist of small buildings in length. The castle illustrates the style of Norman seigneurial residences, adapted to the rural life of the eighteenth century. Its listing in the inventory of historic monuments and its remarkable garden label underline its heritage and landscape value.

The site is located 1.5 km north of La Rouge, a former municipality now integrated in Val-au-Perche since 2016. This geographical location, in the district of Mortagne-au-Perche, reinforces its anchoring in the local heritage of Lower Normandy (now Normandy).
