Origin and history

The castle of Loriol, originally named Anières, was mentioned in the 12th century with owners such as Hugo de Asneria (circa 1100) and Umbertus de Asnériis (1186). In 1306, an act by Count Aimé de Savoie authorized Guérric de Sachins to build a strong house, marking the first written trace of a fortified building. In the 15th century, the Duke Louis de Savoie allowed Galois de Sachins to add a fourth tower, setting the final plan of the castle (donjon + three existing towers).

In the 16th century, minor works embellish the interior, as the decoration of the chapel in the dungeon (dated engraved: 1543). A conflict between Loriol Coseigneurs and a Lady of Fame leads to the erection of a wall in the courtyard and the closing of windows. Jean de Loriol unifies the seigneury in the 17th century, but no document confirms major works before the 18th century, where embellishments (decorative coating, classical pierces) are attested under Louis du Port de Loriol, president of the Parliament of Burgundy.

In the 19th century, the castle was profoundly remodeled in a neo-Gothic style, after preserving its medieval appearance until then. Ranked a Historic Monument in 1994, it also includes a farm and an oven. The archives (plans of 1735, engravings) confirm its structure unchanged between the 15th and the beginning of the 19th century, despite subsequent aesthetic changes.

The sources cite Guichenon (History of Bresse and Bugey, 1650), Léonce Silans (History of Loriol), and the departmental archives of Ain. The site, located in Confrançon (Ain), enjoys geographical accuracy which is considered satisfactory (note: 7/10).
