Origin and history

The château de Loubières, also known as château du Boulais, is a medieval building erected in the 13th century in the commune of Loubières, in Ariège. It is located in an area marked by the influence of the Counts of Foix, where it housed a treasurer paying, stressing its administrative and strategic importance in the feudal era.

In the 17th century, the castle became the theatre of a tragic event: on 13 May 1615, Louis de Florentin, treasurer of the country of Foix, was assassinated there by Huguenots. The perpetrators, tried by the Toulouse Criminal Court, are executed in Foix. This episode illustrates the religious tensions of the time, in an area affected by the wars of Religion.

Since 1815, the castle belongs to the family of Séré and remains a private property. Its facades and roofs, characteristic of medieval architecture, have been protected as historical monuments since 14 March 1977. The site thus retains a remarkable architectural and historical heritage, linked to local and regional history.

The castle is referenced in the Merimée base under the code INSEE 09174, confirming its anchoring in the Ariège department. Although not open to the public, it bears witness to the feudal heritage and social transformations of Occitanie throughout the centuries.
