Origin and history

The Château de Maineuf is a building located in the commune of Quelaines-Saint-Gault, Mayenne, in the Pays de la Loire region. Although its exact construction period is not specified, it is attested as early as 1297 under the name of Mainneuf in the charter of the abbey of la Roë, making it a site of local historical interest.

The archives mention the castle in the bottom of the Garaudière, but little detailed information is available on its architecture or occupants. Its existence is mainly documented by bibliographic sources, such as the Dictionnaire historique, topographie et biographie de la Mayenne (1900-1910), which refers it among the castles of the department.

This type of monument, typical of the Mayan rural heritage, often reflects the medieval seigneurial organization. The castles in the region served as administrative, military or agricultural centres, playing a key role in structuring local territories. Their presence attests to the importance of noble families or religious institutions in managing the lands and surrounding populations.
