Origin and history

The Château de Marson, located in Rou-Marson in the department of Maine-et-Loire (Pays de la Loire), is a building built in two major phases. Between 1850 and 1865, architect Charles Joly-Leterme erected the main body for Count Baillou de la Brosse, reflecting the architectural style of the 3rd quarter of the 19th century. This private castle, inaccessible to the public, is distinguished by its integration into an ambitious landscape.

In 1913, the estate was acquired by Henri Fricotelle, who undertook a significant modernization between 1924 and 1926. The architect Claudon designed a monumental portal adorned by the sculptor Voisine, while Pierre-Jean-Victor Brunel created in 1927 a monumental swimming pool inspired by the ancient thermal baths and Versailles. This swimming pool, decorated with mosaics by Isidore Odorico, is one of the artistic jewels of the site. The castle and its outbuildings (communal, orangery, gate, swimming pool) have been listed in the Historic Monuments since 26 December 1991.

The building thus illustrates a stylistic transition between the Second Empire and Art Deco, while at the same time showing the influence of classical models revisited in the 20th century. The property, always private, retains an exceptional character by its architecture and landscaped amenities, although its access remains reserved.
