Origin and history

Masse Castle is a medieval building located in the northeast of the Aveyron department, three kilometres from Espalion. Built in the 15th century, it illustrates the civil architecture of this period in the Rouergue. Its location reflects its initial role, probably linked to the management of local agricultural resources.

Originally, the castle served as a wheat attic for Bonneval Abbey, an influential religious institution in the region until the French Revolution. After this period, he was transformed into a private residence, marking his transition from collective use to a domestic function. Its inscription in historic monuments in 1928 bears witness to its heritage and architectural value.

No specific information is available on its initial owners or sponsors. The building, however, embodies the economic and religious history of Rouergue, where abbeys played a central role in the organisation of rural territories. Its current state and transformations remain partially documented, limiting the details of its structural evolution.
