Origin and history
Monglat Castle, located in the commune of Cerneux in Île-de-France, is a historical monument built in the 17th century. This castle is distinguished by its protected architectural elements, including an honorary alley with turrets, guard pavilions, a forecourt, as well as moat and bridges. These features, combined with its central motte and a cave or cooler, make it a remarkable example of the castral architecture of this period.
The castle was listed as a Historic Monument by order of 9 October 1990, thus recognizing its heritage value. Today, it belongs to a private company, and although its access to the public is not clearly specified, its location is well documented, with an exact address at 5015 A Monglas, 77320 Cerneux. The accuracy of its location is considered very satisfactory, facilitating its identification in the local landscape.
In the 17th century, in Île-de-France, castles like Monglat often played a central role in the social and economic organization of the surrounding territories. They served as residences for local elites, while symbolizing their power and influence. These buildings were also places of agricultural land management and representation, reflecting the hierarchies and social dynamics of the time.
