Origin and history
The Château de Montaigu is a monument located in the municipality of Argentré, in the department of Mayenne, in the Pays de la Loire region. It is about two kilometres south of the village, in a rural setting. Although its exact origin remains partially documented, it is mentioned on the Cassini Map under the designation "Montaigu, farm", suggesting an old occupation of the site, probably related to an agricultural or seigneurial operation.
A castle is attested as having been built on this site by Stanislas Hardy of Lévaré before 1831. The latter is therefore the known sponsor, marking a period of transformation or reconstruction of the estate. At the end of the 19th century, the castle belonged to Camille Letourneurs du Val, who also held the office of mayor of Louvigné, a neighbouring commune. This period coincides with a time when rural castles often served as residences for local elites, while playing a role in the administration or social life of surrounding territories.
Historical sources, such as the Dictionnaire historique, topographie et biographie de la Mayenne (1900-1910) d'Alphonse-Victor Angot and Ferdinand Gaugain, confirm the existence of the castle but do not provide further details about its architecture or its previous occupants in Hardy de Lévaré. Today, the site is referenced in the Mérimée base, dedicated to the French architectural heritage, which attests to its historical interest and preservation in the cultural landscape of Mayenne.
