Origin and history

The Château de Montfaucon, built in the 11th century, was originally built in wood by Conon de Montfaucon, vassal of the Count of Burgundy and the Archbishop of Besançon. Located on a rocky spur, it served as a strong place to control the area. At the end of the 13th century, Amédée III de Montfaucon rebuilt it in stone, marking the climax of this feudal family.

The Montfaucon family, one of the most powerful in the county of Burgundy and Montbéliard, kept the castle until the 15th century, where it passed to Chalon-Arlay-Prince d'Orange. In 1477, he escaped the destruction by Louis XI after the fall of Charles the Temerary, unlike other Burgundian fortresses. The site was finally abandoned after the Dix Ans war (1634-1644), led by Richelieu.

The castle, composed of three enclosures, a hexagonal dungeon and a polygonal tower, protected a castral village with a church dated 1311. Ranked a historic monument in 1976, its ruins were acquired by the commune in 1984. Since then, restoration works aim to enhance it for tourism, thus preserving this medieval heritage.

Historical excavations and studies, such as those of René Locatelli or the University of Besançon, have helped to trace its architectural evolution and its strategic role. The site illustrates the feudal organization in Franche-Comté, between seigneurial power, military defense and community life around the castle.

Today, the castle of Montfaucon offers a rare testimony of the Comtois fortresses, with its imposing remains and its history linked to the great regional dynasties. Its local association works for its enhancement, between preservation and cultural mediation.
