Origin and history

The Château de Montfaucon, located in the Gard in the Occitanie region, is a medieval building built in the 12th century on the rock of Saint-Maur. It made it possible to control river traffic on the Rhône and collect tolls, thus playing a strategic role in the region. Its dominant location offered stunning views of the river and surrounding areas, reinforcing its defensive and economic importance.

In the 16th century, the castle was destroyed for reasons still unknown, marking a period of abandonment or decline. It was only in 1891 that Baron Louis de Montfaucon undertook his restoration and expansion. Inspired by Scottish castles, he gave him a unique triangular shape in France, in tribute to his mother, Agatha Clavering. This atypical architectural style today distinguishes the monument in the landscape.

The castle has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1926, recognizing its heritage value. It faces Châteauneuf-du-Pape, on the right bank of the Rhone, and bears witness to the medieval history and architectural transformations of the 19th century. Its link with the river and its fortress past make it a symbol of local heritage.

Before the castle, the hill of Saint Maur housed a Gallic oppidum occupied from the Iron Age to the Roman republican era. Excavations revealed ceramics, fibules and traces of a possible river port, attesting to an ancient and strategic occupation of the site. These archaeological discoveries enrich the understanding of Montfalcon's long history.

The village of Montfaucon developed around this historic site. In the Middle Ages, it was owned by local lords, such as Claude de Laudun de Vèzenobre in the 15th century. Today, the restored castle and its medieval history attract visitors' attention, while recalling the importance of the Rhône in the development of the region.
