Origin and history

The Château de Montgeorges is a 16th century building located in the commune of Chavenon, in the department of Allier, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built on a plateau overlooking the valley of the Aumance, it succeeds an older castle with few traces left. Its architecture includes a square tower with a screw staircase and a well preserved murder tower, remains of its defensive role.

Originally, the castle was surrounded by large ditches, now filled, and an enclosure whose tower still remained at the beginning of the twentieth century. These are evidence of its strategic importance in the region. Although its detailed history remains little documented in the available sources, its construction in the 16th century is part of a period of strengthening of local fortifications.

Bourbonnais, where Chavenon is located, was then a region marked by feudal tensions and territorial conflicts. Castles like Montgeorges served as both seigneurial residences and defence points to control valleys and communication axes. Their presence also reflected the power of local noble families, although the archives do not explicitly mention the owners of Montgeorges.
