Origin and history

The castle of Montlaur, also known as the castle of Aubenas, is a "building with metamorphoses" marked by six seigneurial families from the 13th century to the Revolution. Located on a rocky promontory overlooking the Ardèche valley, it was a strategic post between the Cevennes and the Mediterranean plateau. Its 12th century dungeon, 26.50 metres high, and its 14th century round towers reflect its initial defensive role, while its subsequent transformations (Italianloggia, monumental staircase) bear witness to the evolution of aristocratic lifestyles.

The family of Montlaur (1084–1441) erected the dungeon, the enclosure walls and the ditches, making Aubenas a prosperous city thanks to its position on a major commercial axis between Puy-en-Velay and Montélimar. The castle then passes to the Maubec (15th century), which add a gothic tower, then to the Modena (16th century), introducing a Italian loggia. The Ornano (17th century) reinforce its defences (scauguettes, mâchicoulis) while adapting to a residence of pleasure, before the Vogüé (18th century) built Louis XV lounges and a staircase of honor with remarkable ironwork.

Ranked a historic monument in 1943, the castle became a municipal property in 1810 after being looted during the Revolution. Used as a town hall, a court and then a venue for exhibitions, it now houses a contemporary art centre after seven years of restoration (2017–2024). Its architecture combines medieval elements (court, pepper towers), reborn (Arcade Gallery) and classics (18th-century woodworks), illustrating nearly 700 years of ardèche history.

The inner courtyard, the heart of the castle, reveals this temporal stratification: the tower of the Maubec (15th century) is next to the monumental staircase (18th century), while the painted roofs and door windows date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The apartments on the 1st floor, at the Louis XV window, and the rooms dedicated to local memory on the 2nd floor complete this hybrid palace, symbol of seigneurial power and contemporary cultural life.

Its location at the top of the city, facing the house Delichères (15th century) and overlooking the district of Pont-d'Aubenas, recalls its historic role as an economic and social crossroads. The Place du Château, a former fortified lower court, always hosts a weekly market, perpetuating the link between the monument and local life.
