Origin and history

Montrambert Castle was mentioned as one of the small medieval fortresses of the Ognon Valley in 1260. These constructions were then used to control strategic axes and to protect local populations in a feudal context marked by seigneurial rivalries. Its location reflects the military and economic importance of this region at the time.

In the 16th century, the current house body was partially built, marking a transition to a more residential architecture. This change illustrates the evolution of castles into seigneurial houses, typical of the Renaissance, where comfort and social representation took precedence over defensive function.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the castle underwent major modifications with the addition of a building of communes and U-shaped outbuildings in front of the house body. Beginning in 1840, work completed these developments, reflecting the architectural tastes of the period and the needs of a nobility or bourgeoisie in search of modernity. The neo-Roman chapel, built in 1884, bears witness to this desire to beautify and affirm a social status.

Ranked a Historic Monument in 1987, the castle protects its entire chapel, as well as two ground floor rooms decorated with paintings attributed to Costa. These elements highlight the heritage richness of the site, mixing medieval heritage, renaissant transformations and 19th century additions.
