Origin and history
The Château de Montseveny is a former fortress built in the early seventeenth century in Prades, in the department of Ardèche. This type of building, typical of the region, combines defensive attributes like mâchicoulis on ground crows with a residential architecture. It reflects the adaptation of strong houses into more comfortable residences, marked by the addition of houses and commons over the centuries.
The castle was built for Gilbert Vincenti, an officer in the service of the Lord of Ventadour. Its original home was doubled in the 18th or early 19th century, while the commons, partly dated from the 17th century, complete the whole. Inside, an original fireplace and a possible French ceiling remain, testimonies of its history.
Listed as a historical monument in 2001, the castle of Montseveny is fully protected for its home and its communes. It represents a significant example of the architectural evolution of fortified houses in Ardèche, moving from defensive functions to agricultural or residential uses. Its mâchicoulis system, visible on the east and south facades, makes it a remarkable building of this period.
Located about 750 metres south of the centre of Prades, the castle is now an accessible local heritage, although information about its visit or current uses (rent, guest rooms) is not specified in the available sources. Its exact address, 620 Route de Saint-Cirgues de Prades, allows to locate it in a rural environment characteristic of the Ardèche.
