Origin and history
The castle of Nanthiat, classified as a Historical Monument, is distinguished by its 16th century entrance gate, designed to accommodate a drawbridge. This portal, still marked by the original slides, bears witness to the defensive architecture of the Renaissance. The square dungeon, covered by a pyramid and flanked by a turret housing a watchroom, also dates from the 16th century. Its walls retain sculptural details, like heads carrying the hairstyle and strawberry of Catherine de Medici, highlighting the stylistic influence of the era.
Inside, a vaulted room on cross-dogives occupies the ground floor, characteristic of late medieval buildings. The round path, supported by crows, is interrupted by a Renaissance-framed window, mixing defensive and aesthetic utility. The castle was largely renovated in the 18th century, modernizing its structure while preserving original elements such as the dungeon. Only part of the site, the dungeon, has been protected since a 1946 order.
The building illustrates the architectural evolution between the Middle Ages and the modern era, with tangible traces of both periods. Its location in Nanthiat (Dordogne), in an area marked by feudal conflicts and then the agricultural transformations of the Enlightenment, makes it a witness to social and military change. Today, its precise location (3 Le Château, 24800 Nanthiat) and its state of conservation make it a notable local heritage, although its access to the public is not explicitly documented.
