Origin and history
The castle of Noizay, located in the municipality of the same name in Indre-et-Loire, was built in the early 16th century on a feudal site. It served as an arsenal and a repository of weapons for Castelnau, one of the leaders of the Amboise Conjuration in 1560. This plot, discovered by the Duke of Nemours, led to the arrest of Castelnau after an armed intrusion into the castle, followed by a devastating fire.
Reconstructed in the seventeenth century, the castle adopts a characteristic architecture, with a long building extended by two wings in return. Its attices are illuminated by Renaissance gabled windows, while the southern facade, more composite, could date from the Restoration. Inside, a 17th-century wooden staircase with square balusters bears witness to this period of reconstruction.
Listed as a Historic Monument, the castle has been protected from facades, roofs and stairs since 1974. Although partially damaged and modified over the centuries, it retains remarkable architectural elements, such as the double revolution. Its history remains closely linked to the religious disturbances of the sixteenth century and to the architectural evolution of noble residences in Touraine.
