Origin and history

The castle of Peixotto is an 18th century building located in Talence, Gironde, in the New Aquitaine region. Built around 1760 by architect François Lhote for banker Samuel Peixotto, it embodies the refined architecture of the period, with interior elements such as woodwork and a stone staircase with wrought iron ramp. The central living room, in rotunda on the park side, still preserves painted mists and medallions in Louis XVI taste.

In 1810, the castle was sold by Samuel Peixotto's son to the Rodrigues-Henriques family, then in 1852 to Baron François Xavier de Espeleta. In 1884, part of the land was transformed into a botanical garden by the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Bordeaux, marking a new scientific vocation for the field.

The castle has been listed as a historic monument since 23 May 1935, protecting its facades, roofs, the central living room, the staircase, as well as the entrance to the estate and a music pavilion, listed more recently in 2022. Today owned by the municipality of Talence, it is the subject of a renovation aimed at bringing its parks together with those of the castle Margaux, with an end of work planned for the winter 2026.

The interior transformations, especially for the needs of the town hall, have altered part of its original decoration, but some elements such as woodwork, bay frames and cornice remain. The castle thus illustrates the evolution of the uses of historical monuments, between architectural heritage, public service and contemporary cultural project.
