Facades and roofs of 16th and 18th century buildings; cellars (cad. C 66): entry by order of 9 September 1975

Origin and history

The Château de Penin is a historic monument located in the commune of Penin, in the department of Pas-de-Calais (Hauts-de-France). Built mainly in the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, it embodies the aristocratic residential architecture of these periods. Its facades, roofs and cellars were protected by a registration order in 1975, highlighting their heritage value.

The location of the castle, at 1 Rue de Tincques in Penin, is documented in the Merimée base, with geographical precision deemed "very satisfactory". Although available sources (Monumentum, internal data) do not specify its current use, its listing as Historic Monuments attests to its cultural and architectural importance to the region.

The department of Pas-de-Calais, where Penin is located, was historically marked by a rural and artisanal economy in the 16th and 18th centuries. The castles of that time often served as seigneurial residences or local administrative centres, reflecting the power and prestige of their owners. Their preservation today offers a tangible testimony of this past.
