Origin and history
The Château de Pommier, also known as Château du Pommier, is a building located in the commune of Saint-Front-la-Rivière, in the Dordogne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It is about a kilometer south of the village, near the place called Le Caneau, near the departmental road 83. This castle, whose construction seems to date mainly back to the 15th century, has a characteristic architecture of this period, with a square tower without mâchicoulis or niches, but with a larmier. An acute gable housing body completes the whole, although its gables were replaced in the 18th century by smaller tiles.
The castle has been listed as historical monuments since 4 December 1959, a recognition that specifically concerns its facades and roofs. Its structure also includes a corbelled turret, located at the corner of the square dungeon, supporting two metres from the ground. Although the sources mention architectural changes in the 17th and 18th centuries, most of the building seems to retain the features of its original medieval period. No information is available about its historical owners or its precise use throughout the centuries.
The site is located at 283 Le Pommier, in a rural environment typical of the Périgord. The available geographic data give him a satisfactory location accuracy (note 7/10). The castle is not subject to any particular mention regarding its current accessibility (visits, accommodation or events), although its status as a historic monument suggests a marked heritage interest. The photographs available, such as the one credited to Father Igor under Creative Commons license, illustrate his current state without providing further details on his history or restoration.
