Origin and history

Pornic Castle, located on the north shore of the eponymous port, was originally built in wood in the 10th century by Alain Barbetorte, Duke of Brittany, to control maritime access. Reconstructed in stone in the 12th century by the lords of Rais, it became a strategic fortress protecting Bourgneuf Bay. His history was marked by changes of owners, including Gilles de Rais in the 15th century, before his confiscation by the Duke of Brittany during the latter's trial.

In the 18th century, the Marquis Alexandre de Brie-Serrant, economist and owner of the Baronie de Retz, was confiscated during the French Revolution. Ruined, he left the castle in disrepair at his death in 1814. In the 19th century, the monument was bought by bankers (Casimir Perier, Jacques Laffitte, Philippe-François-Didier Usquin), then by the merchant Joseph Le Breton in 1824. The latter undertook a first restoration, followed in 1886 by works carried out by architect François Bougoüin, who gave him his present appearance inspired by Italian castles.

Ranked a Historic Monument in 1986 for its medieval towers and courtines, the castle now belongs to the Vogüé family. It is open to the public at Heritage Days and in summer through visits organised by the Tourist Office. Its architecture thus combines defensive elements from the 13th to 14th centuries with neo-Gothic and Italian additions of the 19th century, reflecting its evolution through the ages.

The site, bordered by the ocean, remains an emblem of Pornic, demonstrating its historic role in protecting the coast and maritime trade. The parts restored in the 19th century, although protected since 2018, contrast with the medieval remains, offering a unique architectural panorama in Pays de la Loire.
