Origin and history

The Château de Poutignac, located in Mareuil in Périgord (New Aquitaine), is an imposing mansion dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, with major changes in the 18th century. It is distinguished by a defensive and residential architecture, combining a large round tower, a round road on crows, and a turret in corbellation. These elements, typical of late medieval constructions, bear witness to its initial role of protection while displaying a high social status.

The main house body, equipped with shaft windows, is completed by a square tower integrated into the house. In the 18th century, a notable change was made with the addition of a roof to the Mansart on the east side, reflecting the evolution of architectural tastes towards more elegance. The commons, attached to the building, suggest a complex domestic organization, characteristic of the great seigneurial houses of the time. The castle has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1948, recognizing its heritage value.

The location of the castle, reported as approximate (accuracy level 5/10), places the monument near the Cote de la Bure, near Beaussac, in the commune of Mareuil-en-Périgord. This area, marked by a dense rural and noble heritage, illustrates the historical importance of the seigneuries in Périgord. Protected elements, such as towers and facades, highlight the architectural richness of the site, although information on its accessibility (visits, accommodation) is not specified in available sources.
