Origin and history

Pouzilhac Castle, located in the Gard department in Occitanie region, has its origins in the 12th century, when its construction began. The building, which was thoroughly renovated in the 19th century, nevertheless retains significant traces of its medieval past, such as a potential kitchen of the period on the ground floor. These later transformations give it a picturesque and eclectic appearance, mixing ancient defensive architecture and recent additions for residential or seigneurial use.

The interior of the castle reveals notable heritage elements, including a 17th century painted ceiling adorning a living room, as well as period chimneys. An 18th-century seigneurial chapel, adjacent to the parish church, bears witness to the religious and social dimension of the estate. The communes, integrated at the end of the 19th century by the resumption of village houses, structure the court of honour, illustrating the evolution of the functional and aesthetic needs of the site.

Ranked among the historical monuments since 15 January 1998, the castle of Pouzilhac sees its facades, roofs, and some interiors (such as the chapel and rooms with painted ceilings) protected. This inscription highlights the heritage value of a building where nearly nine centuries of history overlap, from medieval foundations to modern amenities, reflecting the architectural and social changes of the region.
