Origin and history
Pouzy Castle, located in the commune of Pouzy-Mésangy (Allier, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), is an architectural complex marked by two major periods: the 15th century for its main house body, and the 18th century for its communes. The site, occupied from the Roman period by the villa Posiacum, became a castle in the 13th-XIVth centuries, before being profoundly redesigned in the 15th century. The current house, rectangular, includes a square staircase tower and a circular tower, while its interior retains a "French" ceiling and two contrasting chimneys: a Gothic (West), the other of the eighteenth century (East).
The commons, built in the 18th century after the destruction of fortifications, illustrate a transition to an agricultural and domestic vocation. The East Building, partially defensive (archeries, fire hydrants), borders stables and domestic housing to the south and west. As early as the 18th century, the castle, inscribed in the Historical Monuments in 1981, was inhabited more than by farmers, reflecting the evolution of the Bourbon castles towards rural farms. Its architecture, combining medieval heritage and modern adaptations, makes it a representative testimony of local heritage.
The whole, including facades and roofs of the castle and its communes, is protected by decree of 9 July 1981. The castral motte, surrounded by remains of fortifications, also houses an ancient chapel that became a parish church, highlighting the central role of the site in community life since the Middle Ages. The accuracy of its location is estimated at 8/10, with an address confirmed by the Merimée database (03320 Pouzy-Mesangy).
