Origin and history
The castle of Puits, located in the department of Côte-d'Or in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is attested from 1239 by an agreement of inheritance arbitrated by Hugues IV, Duke of Burgundy. This medieval fortress, mentioned as a "old fortress" in 1774 by Abbé Court Sword, was linked to the customary rights of inhabitants of neighbouring villages, such as Etais and Coulmier. Its strategic location, on a terrace overlooking the village, reflects its historical defensive role.
The present architecture of the castle combines two distinct periods: the 15th century poterne, with a carriageway door, a pedestrian door and a cannon lock, bears witness to its medieval origin. The main house body, probably built in the seventeenth century, adopts a Renaissance style, with facades and roofs protected since 1971. A tower house and a building rebuilt in the 19th century complete the whole, illustrating the successive transformations of the site.
The castle, a private property, does not visit, but its poterne and facades have been classified as Historic Monuments since 1941 and 1971. Its history is marked by changes of owners and a defensive and then residential function, typical of Burgundy castles. Architectural elements, such as the overhanging south terrace or the isolated entrance massif, highlight its adaptation to military and aesthetic needs throughout the centuries.
The location of the castle, on RD 101F between the two parts of the village of Puits, reinforces its anchoring in the local landscape. Although the sources lack some details of its history, its inclusion in the inventory of Historical Monuments and its mention in works such as those of Abbé Court Sword confirm its heritage importance in Burgundy.
