Origin and history
The Château de Recq, located in the commune of Recques-sur-Course (Pas-de-Calais), is a building whose origins date back to the 4th quarter of the 18th century, with major developments made in the 19th century. This monument illustrates the architectural evolution of the aristocratic residences of this period, combining a central body inherited from the Old Regime and later added wings. Its listing in the Inventory of Historic Monuments in 1986 protects key elements such as facades, roofs, commons, portals, as well as remarkable interiors (vestibulum, living rooms, staircase ramp), bearing witness to a preserved heritage.
The location of the castle, at 38 Rue de la Roche, is documented with a precision considered very satisfactory (note 8/10). The site also includes outbuildings such as a dovecote and a wall, characteristic of the seigneurial and then bourgeois domains of the 18th and 19th centuries. These elements, combined with gates and entrance gates, underline the symbolic and functional importance of the castle in its rural environment. The monument, although protected, does not see its current status (open to the public, private use) specified in the available sources.
The department of Pas-de-Calais, integrated into the Hauts-de-France region, was at these times marked by a mixed economy, between agriculture, emerging industries (textile, mining) and commercial networks. Castles like Recq often served as secondary residences for wealthy families, while playing a local social role (receptions, land management). Their architecture also reflected successive stylistic influences, from late classicism to eclectic additions of the 19th century.
