Origin and history

The Château de Réquista, located in La Bastide-l'Évêque in Aveyron, has its origins in the 16th century. A first construction was erected around 1530 by John II of Patras, a copper merchant of Villefranche-de-Rouergue, on the site of an old village which he had bought in 1532. This first building, partially visible today, included a southern body framed by two Polish-style towers. The castle was then enlarged and transformed by its descendants, notably by its grandson John IV Patras, who made changes in 1630 and 1637.

In the 17th century, the castle had important extensions. In 1630, a new part of the southern house body was added, as well as a southwest corner tower. In the second half of the century, a square wing was built as an extension of existing buildings. These changes reflect the changing needs and social status of the then influential Patras family in the region. The castle was also marked by subsequent additions, such as a fourth crenellated tower around 1880, demolished in 1958.

The Château de Réquista is now the property of Jean-Eudes Le Meignen, mayor of Bas Ségala. Listed as historical monuments since 1978 for its facades and roofs, it bears witness to the architectural and social history of the Rouergue. Its evolution, from medieval origins to Renaissance and classical transformations, makes it a remarkable example of the Aveyron heritage, linked to the rise of a family of merchants enriched by the copper trade.
