Origin and history

The Château de Ripaille, located in Thonon-les-Bains in Haute-Savoie, finds its origins in the late 13th or early 14th century as a wooden hunting pavilion on stone base. It was enlarged between 1371 and 1388 by Bonne de Bourbon, transforming this mansion into a marina for Savoie's house. The site became an Augustinian priory in 1410 under Amédée VIII, which later founded the order of Saint-Maurice with six companions.

The Bernese invasion of 1536 ended the monastery, but Emmanuel Philibert raised the castle in 1579 as a stronghold, before it was partially destroyed in 1589 by the Genevans. Restored in 1624, the estate was confiscated at the Revolution and sold as a national property. In the 19th century, Frédéric Engel-Gros, Alsatian industrialist, remania in Renaissance style (exterior) and Art Nouveau (inner), adding an arboretum in 1930.

Today, the castle still belongs to the descendants of the Necker-Engel family. Its 75-hectare estate includes a 22-hectare vineyard (AOC Ripaille), a 53-hectare forest, and a Just Nations memorial inaugurated in 1997 by Jacques Chirac. The legend links its name to the expression "doing grudge", although it precedes its construction.

Ranked as a Historic Monument since 1942, then as a whole in 2025, Ripail combines medieval architecture, religious vestige and bourgeois heritage. The site also hosts cultural performances and maintains a well-known winery, while sheltering an arboretum partially damaged by the 1999 storm.

The castle inspired artistic works, such as opera Le Castel de Rigaille (1875) by Henri Kling or the song Rigaille by Nicoletta (1973). Its history reflects the political and cultural changes of Savoy, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era.
