Origin and history

The Château de Rochefort, located 1.5 km from Asnières-en-Montagne in Côte-d-Or, is a rare example of pre-Renaissance architecture in France. Built on a rocky spur at the borders of the Auxois, Tonnerois and Châtillonnais, it has dominated the valley since the 16th century. His history dates back to the 12th century, evoked in a manuscript of 1196 under the name Rupes Fortis, before being dismantled and rebuilt by Jacques Coitier, doctor of Louis XI, at the end of the 15th century.

In the 16th century, the Rochefort family acquired the castle and enlarged the west house and the chapel. In the 17th century, the Languet, prosecutors in the parliament of Dijon, turned the entrance into a house, built terraces and gardens, and converted the defenses into agricultural buildings. The Revolution saw the estate move to the family of La Guiche, which retained it until 2017, despite partial demolitions in 1806 to recover materials.

Ranked Historic Monument in 1974 after a first failure of protection in the 1970s, the castle was saved in 2017 by the association Les Clefs de Rochefort, which redeems it for a symbolic euro. Since 2018, major restoration campaigns (massive entrance, roofing of communes) have been carried out, with notable support via the Heritage Lotto. The current objective is to secure the seigneurial house, which is still fragile.

The architecture of the castle combines Renaissance elegance (polygonal towers, scauguettes) and military remains, such as the fortified gate. The site, open to guided tours, illustrates both the evolution of construction techniques and the contemporary challenges of preserving rural heritage. The gardens and terraces, once a place of pleasure, complement this historic complex marked by centuries of adaptations.
