Origin and history
The Château de Rochefort-en-Yvelines is a historical monument dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries. It was originally built as a castle, probably under the impulse of Guy de Rochefort, an ally of Chartres Viscounts. The enclosure, characteristic of medieval fortifications, is attributed to this period. This strategic site reflects feudal rivalries and local alliances of the time.
In the 15th century, the castle suffered major damage, probably related to the conflicts of the Hundred Years' War or to the unrest of the League. It was partially demolished after this period, leaving only remains, including a tower and a Louis XIII-style building. These elements, protected by a decree of 1931, recall its architectural evolution between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
Today, the castle belongs to a private company. Although its present state reflects only part of its history, the ruins and the Louis XIII building offer an overview of its military and seigneurial past. The location, noted as satisfactory by the sources, allows us to envisage a visit or contemporary uses as private events.
