Origin and history

The Château de Rochefort in Mirebeau, built in the 15th century, replaces an older building destroyed by fire according to local tradition. Its construction began in 1475 for Jean du Moulin de Rochefort, after obtaining permission from the Duke of Anjou in March 1474. This castle, emblematic of late medieval architecture, illustrates the political and social transformations of the region at the end of the Middle Ages.

During the French Revolution, the castle was converted into a men's prison, marking a radical change in its use. After this period, he became a simple farmer's house before being abandoned. Despite its decline, the monument was listed in the Historic Monuments by order of October 30, 1925, recognizing its heritage value. Today, it is being restored to preserve its heritage.

Located in the present New Aquitaine, near Poitiers, the Château de Rochefort bears witness to the seigneurial dynamics of the late 15th century. Its history also reflects the upheavals suffered by French castles, often reassigned or abandoned after the Revolution. The available coordinates place the site near the centre of Mirebeau, although the accuracy of its location remains to be refined.
