Origin and history
The castle of Rognac is a former mansion built in the 13th century, located in the commune of Coulonges-Cohan, in the department of Aisne ( Hauts-de-France region). This medieval building, typical of the seigneurial architecture of the time, was partially destroyed during violent events in the fourteenth century. Today it bears witness to the social tensions and revolts that marked this period in Picardia.
In the middle of the 14th century, during a peasant revolt, the Rognac mansion was attacked and then burned. This episode reflects the conflicts between local populations and lords, frequent in the context of the economic and social crisis following the Hundred Years' War. The site, although partially in ruins, preserves remarkable elements such as its old common oven, the only vestige still protected as historical monuments since 1928.
The Château de Rognac illustrates the evolution of private fortifications in France in the Middle Ages. Its partial registration in 1928 concerned only the common oven, stressing its importance as an element of rural heritage. The location of the site, in a department marked by military history, makes it a witness to the local dynamics between seigneurial power and peasant communities.
