Origin and history

The Château de Roquefère is a 17th-century building located in the eponymous village in the department of Aude, Occitanie region. It is distinguished by its original access, marked by a ramp formerly preceded by a drawbridge, destroyed during the development of the modern road. Inside, a first courtyard houses the village's parish church, while the south facade, flanked by two square towers, bears witness to its defensive architecture. The remains of the feudal walls, with their round towers and a scauguette, recall its medieval origin, although the present structure dates mostly from the seventeenth century.

The large castle room retains remarkable elements, such as a stone fireplace decorated with three high relief panels and local granite pedestals. The ceiling, with exposed beams, shows no trace of painted decoration, suggesting a vocation both residential and utility. In 1985, facades, roofs and this large hall were included in the inventory of historical monuments, thus protecting this architectural heritage. The original staircase, leading to the south gate, was replaced around 1890 by a two-fold staircase, illustrating the adaptations suffered by the castle over the centuries.

The site, although partially modified (as evidenced by the disappearance of the drawbridge), offers a typical example of Languedoc's rural castles, mixing medieval heritage and modern times transformations. Its inscription as a historic monument underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its integration into the local fabric, with a parish church directly associated with its enclosure. Available sources, such as Monumentum and Wikipedia, confirm its role as a historical landmark in the country of Carcassonne.
