Origin and history
The castle of Roquelaure stands west of Lassouts, in the northeast of the department of Aveyron. Although the castle itself is now in ruins, its 12th century Romanesque chapel bears witness to remarkable architecture. This building, rectangular with a choir in hemicycle, is distinguished by its harmonious proportions, carved capitals, modillons and bays. The chapel was vaulted on dogif crosses in the Gothic era, and its roof is covered with local slates carved in scales.
The Chapel of Roquelaure Castle has been classified as historical monuments since 21 September 1981. It is home to a retable whose limestone group, dating back to the 16th century, represents a Tombing. The latter was classified separately on 21 October 1963. The ensemble now belongs to the municipality of Lassouts, and its state of conservation, though partial, allows to appreciate the quality of its medieval architecture.
The site is located precisely at the place called Roquelaure, at 5571 Roquelaure, in the municipality of Lassouts. The GPS coordinates available offer a location that is considered satisfactory (level 6/10). No information is provided on the current accessibility of the castle or its chapel, or on any visits or tourist uses (guest rooms, room rental).
