Origin and history

The castle of Roquetaillade is part of a set of six fortresses protecting the city of Ambialet, ancient Viscount of the Trencavels. Built on platforms overlooking the Capelle and King's forts, it served as a key point in the city's defensive system. His remains, such as stairs, guises and benches, attest to a prolonged occupation, although partially destroyed during the religious wars in 1568 by the Huguenots. The site, now in ruins, was linked to the ramparts surrounding the three fortified districts of Ambialet, themselves equipped with slotted towers and mâchicoulis.

The city of Ambialet, divided into three independent fora, was a strategic place controlled by noble families such as the Trencavels or the Castelpers. The castle of Roquetaillade, close to the Priory of the Oder and the Old Castle, illustrates medieval military architecture adapted to the steep relief. It belonged to the Dupuy family of Montmejan for a time, although little information specifies their exact role in its history. The surrounding forts, such as that of the Capelle (a 15th century fortified church) or the Saint John Castle with its square dungeon, complemented this complex defensive device.

The Wars of Religion marked a turning point for these fortifications: in 1568, the Huguenots destroyed much of the buildings, leaving the ruins to be abandoned. In spite of this, some elements such as the church of Notre-Dame de la Capelle, an ancient castral chapel that became parish, remain. The coat of arms of the Castelpers in his choir recalls their local influence. The remains of the castle of Roquetaillade, though fragmentary, offer an overview of medieval construction techniques and the military organization of the Viscount.
