Origin and history

The Château de Roubion is a medieval castle built in the 12th century, located on a rocky spur nicknamed "the bar of Castel", overlooking the village of Roubion in the Alpes-Maritimes. This strategic site offered a dominant view of the valley, typical of the fortifications of the era designed to control passages and protect local populations.

The castle was first mentioned at the end of the 12th century. In the 13th century it belonged to the brothers Guillaume and Raimond Rostaing, co-teachers of Beuil, who exercised seigneurial justice there. This judicial role reflected the importance of the castle as a centre of local power, where the affairs of the community were decided under their authority.

By marrying Andaron Grimaldi in the 13th century, the castle integrated the heritage of the Grimaldi family of Beuil, an influential line of the region. This change of ownership marked a new phase in its history, linking its destiny to that of this powerful noble family.

In 1691, during the war of the Augsburg League, the castle and the village were burned and looted by the French troops of the Marquis de Vins. This destructive episode left only the bases of the four towers and the remains of the walls of the enclosure, silent testimonies of its tumultuous past.

Roubion Castle was listed as a historic monument by decree of 22 December 1941, recognizing its heritage value. Today, the ruins of the castle, owned by the commune, recall the strategic and historical importance of this medieval site in the Alpes-Maritimes.
