Origin and history
The castle of Roujoux, mentioned in 1450, is a building whose history spans centuries. In the 16th century, a south wing was added, marking a first expansion phase. The 17th century saw the construction of the central house body, a round tower, a ramp staircase, as well as the alteration of the house, shortened, and the addition of a porch with drawbridge. These transformations reflect the evolution of the defensive and residential needs of the era, while integrating architectural elements characteristic of the century.
At the end of the 19th century, after a period of abandonment, important work was undertaken, partially erasing the interior distribution of the 16th century. These renovations, although modernising, have altered some historical aspects of the castle. Despite these changes, the site retains major elements of its past, such as moat and platform, which reflect its strategic and residential importance throughout the ages.
The castle of Roujoux has been listed in the Historical Monuments since 5 March 2007, for the entire building, platform and moat. Today owned by a private company, it embodies a major architectural and historical heritage of the Centre-Val de Loire region, although its access to the public and its current uses (visits, rental, guest rooms) are not specified in the available sources.
