Origin and history
The château de Rupt-sur-Saône is a historic building located in the Haute-Saône department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built probably in the 12th century, it overlooks the Saône valley and is located close to an ancient Roman way, then a road dedicated to the salt trade. This strategic positioning suggests its role in controlling regional trade.
The castle originally belonged to Guy de Pesmes, before changing owners several times. In 1820, it was acquired by Count Albert Gaspard Grimod of Orsay, general of the Empire, whose tomb is visible in front of the local church. The latter contributed to the enrichment of the estate by adding a gentilhommière and other dependencies.
The estate consists of several outstanding architectural elements: a 13th century circular tower, 33 meters high, vestige of the medieval castle; A 16th century "Little Castle" built on the 12th century ramparts; as well as an Italian-style farm, a billiard room (1870), and an orangery. These buildings are surrounded by a park with trees, including a three-hundred-year-old Virginia tulip tree.
The castle was listed as a historic monument in 1991, recognizing its heritage value. Its history reflects the architectural and social transformations of the region, from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.
