Origin and history

The castle of Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye, located in the Nièvre department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is an emblematic monument of the Renaissance. Built between 1530 and 1540 by Antoine de Rochechouart-Chandeniers-Faudoas, it replaces a feudal fortress probably destroyed in 1402 during the invasion of Auxerrois by the Duke of Burgundy. This castle, classified as a Historic Monument in 1991, illustrates the refined architecture of its time and the influence of local noble families, such as the Rochechouart and the Mancini, who owned it.

The castle is intimately linked to the history of Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye, a commune marked by its pottery tradition since the 14th century. In the 16th century, the city became a major centre of utilitarian sandstone production, an activity that lasted until the 19th century. The castle, after belonging to figures like Cardinal Mazarin and the Guyot family of Montchougny, now houses a museum dedicated to ceramics, celebrating this unique artisanal heritage.

The building also reflects the social and political changes in the region. Passed into the hands of several aristocratic families, including the Lützelstein, Grancey and Mancini, it symbolizes the alliances and legacies that shaped the Puisaye. In the 20th century, it became a place of preservation of local memory, with collections highlighting traditional sandstone and works by artists such as Jean Carriès, who worked in the region.

The city of Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye, labeled Cité de Charactere et Ville et Métiers d The castle, with its central staircase and moat, remains a major architectural testimony, while the Saint-Amand church, classified in 1975, completes this historical and cultural heritage.

Finally, the castle embodies the transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, with defensive elements inherited from the past and landscapes inspired by Italy. Its history is also that of the artisans and lords who marked the Puisaye, making Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye a place where noble memory and popular know-how blend together.
