Origin and history
The Château de Saint-André, located in the municipality of the same name in Occitanie, is a historical monument dating back to the 16th century. It is associated with a wine estate, notably its cellar built in 1813, which depends on the castle of Montus. This rectangular cellar is protected to the north by a embankment and has a southern façade arranged around a large gate. Its pebble and cut stone structure, as well as its rump roof, reflect the local architectural techniques of the era.
In the early 1990s, the building underwent major restoration. A new cellar, connected to the existing building by a terrace, was added, while the wooden frame, consisting of 15 farms, was preserved. Two re-use beams, dating from the mid-16th and early-17th centuries respectively, attest to the partial longevity of the materials. Today, the interior houses 11 modern stainless steel tanks, integrated in a historical setting.
The castle and its cellar are located in the area of appellation contrôlée of Madiranais, highlighting their link with the regional wine tradition. The facades and roofs of the building were inscribed in the Historic Monuments by order of 18 May 1971, thus recognizing their heritage value. Despite an approximate GPS location (accuracy noted 5/10), the official address recorded in the Merimée base confirms its anchoring in Saint-André, Tarn.
