The two buildings in square (Box BL 128): registration by order of 21 December 1984

Origin and history

The castle of Saint Christophe, located in Brignoles in the department of Var, is a monument whose origins date back to the 11th and 12th centuries. Its two square buildings, inscribed in the Historical Monuments by decree of December 21, 1984, illustrate a typical architecture of this medieval period. The building is located on the Vins-sur-Caramy road, in a geographical setting marked by an approximate location reported as "a priori satisfactory" in the heritage databases.

In the 11th and 12th centuries, the Provencal region was marked by a feudal organization where castles played a central role in the defence of territories and local administration. These fortifications served as refuges for the people, while symbolizing the power of the local lords. The château of Saint-Christophe is in this context, although the available sources do not specify its exact role or its potential original owners.

Its recent listing (1984) reflects a late recognition of its heritage value.
