Origin and history
The Château de Saint-Cirgues, located in the department of Puy-de-Dôme, is a building whose origins date back to the first half of the 16th century. At that time, he presented himself as a defensive fortress, with four round towers, crenelated walls and an external ditch. These elements reflected the military needs of the Renaissance, while integrating residential aspects of the castles of that period.
In the 18th century, the castle underwent major architectural transformations to adapt to the tastes of the era. The towers were domed with domes, and the facades were pierced with wide openings, marking a passage towards a more elegant and less austere style. In the 19th century, an archature replaced the western fence, opening the castle on a landscaped park, while its interior was decorated in the Troubadour style, a romantic movement of the early 19th century.
The castle experienced a devastating fire on 28 March 1990, which destroyed much of the roofs and interior decorations. Despite this disaster, it was included in the additional inventory of historic monuments in 2002, thereby recognizing its heritage value. In the 1980s, before the fire, he hosted summer camps and sports courses, demonstrating his social and educational use.
Since 2023, the commune of Saint-Cirgues-sur-Couze has been undertaking rehabilitation work to restore this monument. Starting in the fall of 2027, it will house an inter-municipal school comprising several neighbouring communes (Chidrac, Saint Vincent, Tourzel-Ronzières), marking a new page in its history, oriented towards education and the local community.
Today, the castle belongs to the commune and remains a symbol of the architectural and historical heritage of Puy-de-Dôme. Its protected elements include not only the structure itself, but also its interior decorations (chapel, stairs, woodwork, fireplaces) and its park with its fences, thus preserving a coherent and representative set of centuries of history.
