Origin and history
The castle of Saint-Diéry is built on a basaltic esplanade extending a circular hill, probably a vestige of an ancient primitive castle. Nearby stands a 11th century chapel, while the present Romanesque dungeon, dated the 13th or 14th century, replaces an earlier construction. This rectangular dungeon includes a vaulted tank on the ground floor and three floors covered with stone cradles. The roadmen took over the site in the 14th century, marking its medieval history.
In the 18th century, the castle was profoundly remodeled: the house body was equipped with woodwork and wallpapers from the Directoire period, while defensive elements (fortified doors, western defence system) remained. The chapel, classified as a Historic Monument in 1903, was rebuilt in 1963. The rest of the castle, including decorated rooms (guard room, Gothic rooms, stables of 1778) and the feudal motte, was registered in 1998.
The site preserves various traces of its evolution: graffiti of galleys and birds in Gothic rooms, tiled tomettes varnished dating from medieval construction, and a park with grounds and communal buildings. The ensemble illustrates the transition between a feudal fortress and an aristocratic home, typical of architectural transformations in Auvergne between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
